Gillie Charlson

Award winning artist Gillie Charlson attended Art College after school and worked as a designer, painter and teacher. She established as a doll artist in 1975 and started to make porcelain dolls in 1980. Her inspiration is drawn from old pictures or a neighbour's child.

Heads and limbs are made of porcelain attached to a flexible cloth body. Gillie uses only natural materials for the wigs and eyelashes of her dolls.
The beautiful clothes are mainly made of antique materials to provide the right look for her dolls.

Please note these dolls have been especially created for collectors and are not suitable as a toy for children.

Estelle

In her white cotton dress with broderie anglaise Estelle looks like a young lady going to a garden party around the turn of the 19th Century.

Estelle's
head and shoulders are made of fine porcelain as are the arms  from below the elbow and 3/4 of the legs. Her head is marked 'Gillie' on the shoulder plate. Estelle has a light blond very fine quality mohair wig. She has the most beautiful glass blue eyes and beautiful handpainted facial details. Her body is made of cotton it is not jointed but flexible as it is wired.

The dress she wears is a unique piece and made of off-white mainly antique fabrics (some aging), decorated with moss-green ribbons.
Estelle wears two petticoats made of cream cotton with lace and  knee-long pants edged with lace. She has a hat made of cream coloured silk decorated with cream coloured flowers. In her ears long pearl drop earrings. Her off-white ajour knitted socks and fine off-white leather shoes make her outfit complete.

In her hand she holds a bouquet of antique flowers.

Gillie Charlston made 68 cm, 27" large Estelle in 1994.

She is a dream!

Amber

With her hazlenut-brown plaits and beautiful eyelashes Amber looks as if she comes straight from Shakespeare's Midsummernight's Dream.

Her clothes also give you the feeling she comes from a time far away.
Doll artist Gillie Charlson used beautiful fabrics to give Amber this look.
Her head and arms below the elbow and her legs below the knees have been sculpted beautifully of very fine porcelain.
She has brown glass eyes and beautifully painted facial details. Her soft cotton body has no joints but is flexible as it is wired.

Amber wears knee long trousers and a petticoat of cream coloured cotton edged with lace. She is wearing a pleated dress with a cream lace topdress.

Her mohair wig is crowned by flowers held together by a mauve coloured silk ribbon. A similar ribbon decorates her dress.

Amber represents England in the series of 4 dolls representing England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland in a limited edition of 50 pieces. She comes with her certificate and is marked 'Gillie' on her shoulderplate.

Gillie Charlson made 53,5 cm, 21”, Amber in 1994.

Amber is in mint condition. She has never been on display.
